Editorial introduction

Die Fragen, welche Pflanzenarten auf mehreren Kontinenten beheimatet oder gar weltweit zu finden sind und auf welche Weise sie sich ausgebreitet haben, beschäftigten Humboldt und die Geobotaniker seiner Zeit. Der englische Naturforscher Martin Lister berichtete 1675 über das Vorkommen des in Europa beheimateten Portulak (Purslane, Portulaca oleracea) auf der Insel Barbados. In Karl Sigismund Kunths Ideensammlung zur Neuausgabe der Geographie der Pflanzen wird auf das Exzerpt aus Listers Bericht mit dem Kommentar „älteste Frage von Lister“ und der Sigle S verwiesen.
