| 9r13 most of the European species have a counterpart in North america and a similar reciprocity takes place between the tropical countries. Thus Hypnum dendroides in Europe corresponds to Hypnum (Climacium) americanum of the united states: Hypnum abietum to Hypnum scitum: Hypnum illecebrum to Hypnum Boscii: Hypnum serpens to Hypnum radicale &c: In the tropics Hypnum gratum seems generally spread: Hypnum pallidum of Humboldt corresponds to Hypnum serratum from the isle de Bourbon: The species most diffused are Hypnum proliferum, but this in the tropics often gives way to Hypnum fuciforme. Hypnum cupressiforme is found every where; – in every country where there are shady woods: As may be expected the tropical varieties are more tender, and approach to the Genus Hookeria, but I cannot separate them.
Fontinalis antipyretica & Fontinalis squamosa are common to Europe & North America. Fontinalis falcata is peculiar to Lapland, and Fontinalis capillacea to Pennsylvania .
is peculiar to Nepal.
what I said of Hypnum applies also here: scarcely two people have agreed what are to be considered species. But among those found every where Polytrichum commune holds the first rank: From the North to the South arctic circles there is scarcely a country [...] but posesses it. Polytrichum juniferinum is also nearly as common although few species at present lie hithertho known in the Southern hemisphere, still I suspect them abound as much as in the Northern. A few species as Polytrichum convolutum & its allies grow in the tropics.

A few species are very
