König von 1771–1792; seine politischen Ansichten und sein Staatsstreich 1772 brachten sowohl Adel (Privilegienabbau) und Bürgrliche (Widerstand gegen die Höhergestellten) gegen ihn auf, aber er schuf 1772 eine neue fortschrittliche Verfassung für Schweden.
