Italienischer Naturforscher; ging 1764 von Padua nach Portugal, seit 1765 lehrte er an der Universität Coimbra und kuratierte dort den Botanischen Garten; gestaltete später den Botanischen Gartens des Schlosses Aruja in Lissabon (Jardim Botânico da Ajuda) und er war Mitinitiator der 1779 in Lissabon gegründeten Akademie der Wissenschaften
