1772 gegründet von Friedrich II. als „Generaldirektion der Seehandlungs-Sozietät“ in Berlin, wurde die Gesellschaft im 19. Jahrhundert ausgebaut zu einem Geld- und Handelsinstitut für internationale Geschäfte des preußischen Staates. 1918 wird das Institut in Preußische Staatsbank umbenannt. Nach der Liquidierung ihrer ruhenden Einlagen 1983 wurde ein Teil des Vermögens zum Grundstock der Stiftung Preußische Seehandlung.
